By Liteboho Tsiu – Divisional Secretary Mafeteng Division
The Lesotho Red Cross Society Mafeteng Division offices were damaged by the heavy rains and hail storms that hit Mafeteng district and forced them to move to a government office temporarily.
Thanks to NORAD through Norwegian Red Cross Society, our partner, the offices are currently being reroofed and will be completed by the end of the month.
According to the Divisional Chairperson Mr. Sechaba Mothupi , the offices were first hit this year in January immediately after long Christmas holidays and then again in February. In January first aid kits, files, office equipment were completely destroyed and the office flooded.
The building was built by youth and the Lesotho Armed Forces during a weeklong work camp. It has been affected in the past by extreme weather conditions, and it is clear that it was not build properly to withstand these harsh climatic conditions.
Since 2001 when the country started having unusually strong winds and rains, the Mafeteng town where the Divisional offices are situated has been hard hit.
Mafeteng Red Cross Division and the entire Lesotho Red Cross Society is appealing to all people, government, companies, organisations of good will to come to the rescue of the Division so that it may continue with its humanitarian work. There is a need to build a completely new structure that will withstand all kinds of weather conditions.
